Medical Director – Ophthalmology

About the role

Fortrea is looking for a Europe‑based, remote Medical Director (or Senior Medical Director) with deep expertise in ophthalmology and innovative therapies such as cell and gene therapy. The role provides medical leadership across all development phases, from early‑stage innovation to late‑phase global programs, and serves as a key liaison with clients, partners and internal teams.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and oversee ophthalmology clinical programs, acting as study physician and providing medical monitoring oversight.
• Contribute to protocol development, safety review, endpoint definition and eligibility criteria.
• Partner with clients and internal teams on business development, shaping clinical strategy for proposals and bid defenses.
• Assign physician resources, ensure timely delivery of medical deliverables, and supervise global or regional project physicians as needed.
• Review and revise protocols, case report forms, training materials, analysis plans, clinical trial reports and new drug applications.
• Prepare materials for investigator meetings and support site initiation visits.

Required profile

• MD degree with board certification in ophthalmology.
• Minimum 3 years of drug development and clinical research experience in the pharmaceutical or CRO industry.
• Proven experience leading or supporting ophthalmology clinical programs, including cell and gene therapy projects.
• Strong scientific leadership with the ability to engage senior client executives and external partners.
