Parkinson's Nurse Specialist – Part‑time (2‑yr Fixed‑Term)

About the role

The Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist will provide specialist nursing care to people living with Parkinson’s disease across County Mayo and surrounding areas. Working 14 hours per week on Wednesdays and Thursdays, the role is part‑time and fixed‑term for two years, supporting patients, families and care partners to manage the condition and promote self‑care.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a defined caseload of Parkinson’s patients, assessing needs and planning, implementing, documenting and evaluating care.
• Prioritise newly diagnosed patients, delivering tailored education and teaching sessions.
• Develop therapeutic relationships with patients and families, involving them in treatment decisions.
• Provide psychological support and education on disease‑specific therapies.
• Act as an expert resource for other health professionals, offering specialised advice on diagnosis and management.
• Collaborate with neurologists, geriatricians and the wider Parkinson’s Ireland team to develop community services.
• Travel across County Mayo and surrounding areas to deliver community‑based care.

Required profile

• Registered nurse with experience in neurological or Parkinson’s disease care.
• Ability to work independently and manage a caseload with minimal supervision.
• Strong communication skills for education of patients, families and health‑care teams.
• Willingness to travel within County Mayo and occasional evenings or weekends.
• Commitment to evidence‑based practice and continuous professional development.
