Principal Research Scientist I – Small Molecule

About the role
AbbVie’s Westport site is seeking a Principal Research Scientist I to lead research within the Small Molecule Business Units, focusing on ophthalmic product development. The role combines scientific leadership, project management, and people development in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment.
Key responsibilities
- Supervise and mentor a team of scientists, evaluating performance and fostering individual development.
- Act as principal investigator/project manager, conceiving and executing innovative research or development strategies.
- Generate original technical ideas, lead project science, and contribute to multiple project teams.
- Anticipate scientific, regulatory, and competitive advances and devise appropriate response strategies.
- Produce primary authorship on publications, presentations, and regulatory documents.
- Promote integration within the global PDS&T function and contribute to the growth of the analytical department.
Required profile
- Recognized expert in small‑molecule and ophthalmic research, with a strong publication record.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and drive high performance.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills and a track record of ‘out‑of‑the‑box’ thinking.
- Experience managing complex projects from concept through execution.
