Resident Doctor – Eye Casualty (Senior Non‑Consultant)

About the role

This position provides senior non‑consultant medical cover within an Eye Casualty department and associated outpatient services. Working under consultant oversight, the Resident Doctor will deliver autonomous patient care within a defined scope of practice.

Key responsibilities

• Perform high‑quality medical assessment, diagnosis and treatment for patients presenting to Eye Casualty.
• Manage ongoing inpatient and outpatient care, prescribing and ordering investigations according to clinical protocols.
• Escalate complex cases to the consultant‑led team and support multidisciplinary colleagues.
• Maintain accurate medical records and contribute to audit, quality‑improvement and governance activities.
• Participate in teaching, supervision and service‑development initiatives.

Required profile

• Full General registration with the Irish Medical Council (specialist registration not required).
• Minimum four years post‑internship clinical experience in acute hospital medicine.
• Previous experience at SHO/Registrar level in eye casualty or ophthalmology clinics.
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously within a defined scope and strong escalation skills.

Required skills

• Clinical assessment and diagnosis in ophthalmology.
• Prescribing and ordering investigations within hospital policies.
• Performance of approved ophthalmic procedures within competence and credentialing.
