Software Engineering Manager (Java) - Commerce Hub
fiserv · Dublin
Job description
About the role
Fiserv, a global leader in fintech and payments, is modernising a high-volume global payment processing platform, moving from a monolithic, batch-driven architecture to an event-driven microservices platform on AWS. As Software Engineering Manager (Java) for the Commerce Hub, you will lead one or more delivery teams through this ground-up build, owning both the people and the delivery outcomes. The role is deeply technical: you will take part in architecture and design discussions, challenge your teams on technical approach and make sound engineering trade-offs. You will also embed AI-assisted development into your teams' ways of working.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and develop engineering teams, hiring, coaching and retaining strong engineers while building a culture of ownership, quality and continuous improvement.
- Own delivery outcomes, with teams shipping production-ready software incrementally, with clear integration milestones rather than big-bang releases.
- Participate in technical direction through architecture discussions, design reviews and trade-off decisions.
- Drive engineering standards such as TDD, CI/CD discipline, observability and production readiness.
- Remove blockers, resolve cross-team dependencies and shield teams from noise.
- Work as a peer with engineering leads in Pune and partner with Principal Engineers and Domain Architects.
- Foster AI-first engineering practices across development, testing and problem-solving.
Required profile
- Proven experience leading engineering teams delivering distributed systems, with both management and delivery ownership.
- Strong technical background in modern Java or Kotlin, microservices and event-driven architectures, able to read code and review designs.
- Experience building and scaling teams, including hiring, onboarding and developing engineers.
- Track record of iterative software delivery in complex environments, with vertical slicing and integration-first approaches.
- Ability to engage credibly with architects and principal engineers on technical decisions.
- Conviction that AI-assisted engineering is transformative, with experience embedding AI tools into team workflows.
- Pragmatic experience with agile delivery.
Required skills
- Modern Java or Kotlin
- Microservices and event-driven architectures
- Agile delivery
- Nice to have: familiarity with payments, financial services or high-volume transactional domains; exposure to Confluent Cloud, AWS, Kubernetes or GitLab CI
