Staff Nurse Inpatient General

About the role

UPMC Whitfield Hospital is seeking a full‑time Staff Nurse to join its Inpatient General unit in Waterford. The role involves delivering high‑quality patient care, supporting the multidisciplinary team, and contributing to the hospital’s learning environment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide safe, patient‑centred clinical care to a designated group of inpatients on each shift.
• Act as preceptor for preregistration students and mentor new clinical and non‑clinical staff.
• Liaise with nursing education lecturers to maintain the hospital as a recognised learning site.
• Collaborate with consultants, the multidisciplinary team, patients and carers to identify and address nursing needs.
• Maintain accurate documentation, adhere to clinical risk reporting, health‑and‑safety policies and accreditation standards.
• Participate in quality improvement, clinical audit and research activities.

Required profile

• Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) and annual verification.
• Experience in inpatient general nursing, with the ability to act as a preceptor and mentor.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Commitment to patient safety, quality standards and continuous professional development.

Required skills

• Basic Life Support (BLS) and Resuscitation competence.
• Patient moving and handling techniques.
• Knowledge of clinical risk reporting procedures.
• Familiarity with NMBI Scope of Practice Framework and Code of Professional Conduct.
