Staff Nurse – Pre‑Assessment (Elective Surgery)

About the role

The Pre‑Assessment Service at UPMC Whitfield Hospital is seeking a Staff Nurse to lead comprehensive clinical assessments for elective patients across surgery, cath lab, paediatrics and endoscopy. The role ensures patients are safely evaluated, optimised and fully prepared before admission, supporting efficient patient flow and high‑quality surgical outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct thorough pre‑operative assessments, including medical history, medication review, allergies and risk factors.
• Perform and interpret baseline investigations such as phlebotomy, ECG, vital signs and relevant screening tests.
• Identify clinical risks and escalate concerns to medical, anaesthetic or specialist teams.
• Provide patient education on fasting, medication management and postoperative expectations.
• Coordinate referrals to specialist services and ensure appropriate documentation in electronic and paper records.
• Schedule pre‑assessment appointments, follow‑up investigations and communicate test results.
• Liaise with surgical, anaesthetic, theatre, cath lab and endoscopy teams to confirm patient readiness.
• Participate in service planning, workflow optimisation and compliance with hospital policies.
