Cranes Operator (FIFO)

About the role

Newmont's Lihir Operation, an open-pit gold mine on the island of Niolam about 800 km north of Port Moresby, is looking for a crane operator. You will execute complex lifts for mining, maintenance and infrastructure projects safely and on schedule. This is a FIFO role on a 28-day on, 14-day off roster.

Key responsibilities

• Pre-start checks: inspect the allocated crane, document its maintenance status and report faults or non-compliances.
• Plan and risk assessment: inspect the site before setting up the crane, identify hazards and choose the most suitable crane and approach.
• Set up the crane correctly at all times according to WHS legislation, site policies, procedures and manufacturer instructions.
• Operate the crane in line with legislation, policies and manufacturer instructions, interpret load charts to calculate safe working loads and monitor rigging before lifting.
• Handle critical and non-standard lifts in line with site and industry standards.
• Pack up and perform post-operational checks, report operational issues and record them in the maintenance logbook.
• Lead the team, make key safety decisions and ensure all controls are in place around the crane's work area.

Required profile

• Prior relevant experience in fixed plant maintenance and heavy industry is essential.
• Familiarity with safe work procedures for mobile lifting equipment.
• Proficiency in English with excellent verbal and written communication.
• Sound, analytical and critical thinking; problem-solving under pressure.
• Active listening and people skills.
