Head of Internal Audit – Hybrid (Dublin/Cork)

About the role

The Head of Internal Audit leads the internal audit function, providing independent assurance and advisory services that add value and improve operations. Reporting functionally to the Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee and administratively to the CFO, the role works closely with senior management and the Board.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and align the Internal Audit Charter with IIA best practice.
• Develop risk‑based annual audit plans linked to strategy and risk profile.
• Lead delivery of assurance and advisory engagements across financial, operational, regulatory, ICT/cyber, programme and third‑party risks.
• Communicate audit results to management and the Audit and Risk Committee, highlighting themes, root causes and corrective actions.
• Track audit issues and ensure timely implementation of agreed actions.
• Coordinate assurance activities with Risk, Compliance, Quality, H&S, Data Protection and external auditors.
• Develop and implement an Internal Audit Strategy in line with IIA Standards and the Code of Practice for State Bodies.
• Provide independent governance, risk and control advice on strategic initiatives while preserving audit independence.
• Lead, develop and resource the internal audit team, managing performance and professional growth.
• Support fraud risk management through control evaluation, thematic reviews and investigation support.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in internal audit, preferably at senior leadership level.
• Strong knowledge of IIA Standards and governance frameworks.
• Proven ability to interact directly with senior executives, Boards and Audit Committees.
• Demonstrated experience in risk‑based audit planning and execution.
• Excellent communication and influencing skills.
