Lecturer in Marine Science

About the role

The University of New South Wales is seeking a Lecturer (Level B) in Marine Science to join its School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences. Based in Sydney, the successful candidate will contribute to high‑quality research, teaching and supervision in fisheries research and/or biological oceanography, with strong links to policy and environmental management.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate courses in marine science and related subjects.
• Supervise research students, including honours, Masters and PhD candidates.
• Conduct independent, peer‑reviewed research in areas such as fisheries science, pelagic ecosystems, marine biogeochemistry, or quantitative decision‑making tools.
• Engage with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Our Future Oceans and other research centres.
• Translate scientific findings into policy recommendations and public communication.

Required profile

• PhD in Marine Science, Fisheries Science, Biological Oceanography or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated record of research excellence and peer‑reviewed publications.
• Experience in teaching and supervising students at university level.
• Ability to develop collaborations with state, national or international stakeholders.

Required skills

• Expertise in one or more of the following: fisheries science, aquaculture, biological oceanography, pelagic ecosystem dynamics, marine biogeochemistry, quantitative modelling for management decisions.
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills applied to marine environmental data.
