Materials Engineer

About the role

The Materials Engineer will join Abbott Diabetes Care’s Kilkenny site, supporting the introduction and optimisation of materials and components used in the manufacture of FreeStyle blood glucose test strips and sensors. Working closely with the Materials Engineering Manager and the Technical Services team, the role focuses on troubleshooting material‑related challenges and driving continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Identify root causes of component‑related manufacturing issues using structured problem‑solving techniques.
• Design and execute Design of Experiments (DOE), perform testing, analyse data and report findings.
• Conduct empirical and experimental analyses to support decision‑making.
• Collaborate with Validation, PMO, Operations, Global Engineering and Quality to resolve material challenges.
• Support validation activities for material changes and assist R&D material trials.
• Monitor part performance, drive corrective actions and evaluate proposed material changes.

Required profile

• Experience in a manufacturing or technical services environment, preferably within healthcare or medical devices.
• Strong analytical mindset with ability to conduct root‑cause investigations.
• Proven ability to work cross‑functionally with diverse stakeholders.
• Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high‑quality results.
