Medical Physician – Pre‑Assessment Clinic

About the role

The Medical Physician will join the Pre‑Assessment Clinic at UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic in Dublin, providing comprehensive clinical assessment and support for surgical patients. This permanent, onsite position reports operationally to the Director of Nursing and clinically to the Clinical Director.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate service delivery with the Pre‑Assessment Clinic (PAC) team to ensure seamless teamwork between physicians and nursing staff.
• Provide pre‑assessment clinical services, including comprehensive in‑patient reviews and medical assessments of all PAC patients.
• Diagnose, treat, and follow up on inpatient cases, responding to patient queries and suggesting lifestyle modifications.
• Refer patients with high BMI to GP or bariatric services and manage referrals to specialists to prepare patients for theatre.
• Review test results, communicate pertinent records to specialists, and liaise with anaesthetists regarding surgical suitability.
• Lead the management of deteriorating patients, including ACLS compliance and cardiac arrest response.
• Ensure adherence to clinical guidelines, UPMC policies, and statutory requirements while optimizing resource use.
• Participate in continuing education, research activities, hospital committees, and provide training to staff.

Required profile

• Registered with the Irish Medical Council.
• 5–10 years post‑graduate clinical experience, preferably in an acute hospital setting, general practice or anaesthetics.
• Demonstrated commitment to patient‑centred care and hospital values.
• Willingness to engage in teamwork, education, and quality‑improvement initiatives.

Required skills

• ACLS certification and ability to lead cardiac arrest events.
