Microbiology Lab Technician

About the role

The Microbiology Lab Technician performs microbiological testing on patient specimens to support diagnosis, treatment, and infection control in a hospital setting. The role demands strict adherence to safety, quality, and documentation standards.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, label, and process clinical specimens (blood, urine, swabs, sputum, stool, etc.) following SOPs.
• Conduct microbiological cultures, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, staining, and organism identification.
• Prepare and maintain media, reagents, and solutions for microbiology work.
• Operate and maintain microscopes, incubators, autoclaves, and automated analyzers.
• Record and analyze results, entering data accurately into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
• Follow infection‑control and biosafety protocols to prevent contamination.
• Participate in quality control, instrument calibration, and validation activities.
• Maintain inventory of supplies and report shortages.

Required profile

• Diploma or BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) or equivalent.
• Minimum 3 + years of experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory, preferably in a hospital.
• Strong knowledge of aseptic techniques, media selection, and staining procedures.
• Attention to detail and ability to follow protocols accurately.
• Good communication skills and teamwork orientation.
