Process Shift Technician

About the role

The Process Shift Technician is responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Whitegate refinery. You will monitor process units, respond to changing plant conditions and support continuous improvement across all refinery operating roles.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and monitor steam boilers, pumps, compressors, reactors, distillation columns and associated equipment.
• Transfer crude oil and finished petroleum products between ships, storage tanks and the processing plant.
• Record operational data and maintenance actions in the operator’s logbook.
• Work in the control room using the Distributed Control System (DCS) and other digital platforms.
• Assist senior technicians during planned shutdowns or start‑ups and perform routine equipment inspections for leaks or defects.
• Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, emergency drills and serve on the fire brigade and first‑responder team.

Required profile

• Strong technical aptitude with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Knowledge of health, safety and environmental requirements in the oil and gas industry.
• Excellent communication skills, including clear radio communication during operations.
• Full, current and valid driver’s licence.
• Post‑leaving‑certificate education in Process Controls, Engineering Technology, an apprenticeship or related technical field.

Required skills

• Experience with Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and SCADA.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Computer literacy for operating modern refinery software and digital reporting tools.
