Senior Medical Officer – Public Health (HSE South West)

About the role

The Senior Medical Officer will join the Health Service Executive (HSE) Public Health Service in the South West region, providing clinical leadership across the four core public health domains. This senior position supports the delivery of a new consultant‑led service model aimed at improving health protection, intelligence, service improvement and health improvement for the Irish population.

Key responsibilities

• Lead multidisciplinary public health teams, including epidemiologists, surveillance staff, nurses and research personnel.
• Develop and implement strategies for health protection, health intelligence, health service improvement and health improvement.
• Coordinate with national (hub) and regional (spoke) public health functions to ensure consistent standards and policies.
• Provide expert advice to the Regional Director of Public Health and other senior stakeholders.
• Monitor and respond to emerging health threats and contribute to evidence‑based policy making.

Required profile

• Medical degree with registration in Ireland.
• Specialist training and experience in Public Health Medicine.
• Proven senior leadership experience within a public health or healthcare setting.
• Strong understanding of the four public health domains and ability to drive integrated service delivery.
