Software Development Engineer (open-source)

About the role

As a Software Development Engineer on the AWS Lambda Runtimes team in Dublin, you will design, develop, and maintain the runtime environments that power millions of serverless functions across multiple programming languages. The role combines deep technical work with active participation in upstream open‑source communities to keep the runtimes aligned with language evolution.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, and optimize runtime components for languages such as Python, Node.js, Java.NET, Ruby, Go, and Rust.
• Collaborate with open‑source communities to integrate language updates and security patches.
• Ensure runtime reliability, scalability, and performance at massive scale.
• Write clear documentation and support libraries for internal and external developers.
• Troubleshoot and resolve customer‑facing issues related to runtime behavior.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
• At least three years of professional software development experience.
• Proven contributions to established open‑source projects.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
• Experience designing, debugging, and scaling large‑scale systems.

Required skills

• Proficiency in at least two of the following languages: Java, Python, Node.js, Go, Rust.
• Hands‑on experience with AWS services.
• Understanding of operating system concepts and runtime environments.
• Familiarity with design patterns, reliability engineering, and performance optimization.
