Staff Nurse – Orthopaedics (Full-time, Permanent)

About the role

UPMC Whitfield Hospital is seeking a full‑time, permanent Staff Nurse to join its Orthopaedics unit. The role involves delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care to orthopaedic patients and their families while working closely with a multidisciplinary team.

Key responsibilities

• Provide the highest standard of clinical care to all patients on the orthopaedic ward.
• Act as a preceptor for preregistration students and mentor new clinical and non‑clinical staff.
• Collaborate with nursing education departments to maintain a recognised learning environment.
• Maintain effective communication with the multidisciplinary team to ensure collaborative working practices.
• Support the unit manager by fulfilling agreed responsibilities and participating in accreditation projects.
• Identify and discuss patient needs with consultants, the nursing team, patients and carers.
• Ensure patient safety, act as a patient advocate, and provide emotional support.
• Maintain professional registration and adhere to hospital policies, including clinical risk reporting and health & safety.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with current NMBI registration.
• Experience in an orthopaedic or acute care setting is desirable.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work shift‑based care for a named patient group.
• Commitment to continuous professional development and teamwork.

Required skills

• Basic Life Support / Resuscitation.
• Patient moving and handling techniques.
• Clinical risk reporting.
• Knowledge of NMBI Scope of Practice and Code of Professional Conduct.
• Health and safety awareness.
