Design Engineer – Plastics Fabrication

About the role

Dave Barry Plastics Ltd is looking for a skilled Design Engineer to join its Dungarvan workshop. You will create 2D and 3D designs for plastic components, assemblies, jigs and fixtures, ensuring they are practical, manufacturable and cost‑effective.

Key responsibilities

• Develop detailed 2D/3D CAD models and engineering drawings for plastic parts using Spaceclaim, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor or AutoCAD.
• Translate customer concepts and specifications into manufacturable designs and produce cutting lists and technical documentation.
• Perform design‑for‑manufacture (DFM) evaluations and select appropriate plastics (acrylic, polycarbonate, PVC, HDPE, ABS) based on performance and tolerances.
• Collaborate with workshop staff on CNC routing, laser cutting, thermoforming, bending, bonding and welding processes.
• Troubleshoot design or production issues, propose solutions and support continuous‑improvement initiatives.
• Work with sales and project managers to prepare proposals, cost estimates and feasibility studies.

Required profile

• Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, Product Design or equivalent experience.
• Strong understanding of plastics fabrication processes and material properties.
• Excellent problem‑solving ability and a hands‑on mindset.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD software: Spaceclaim (or Discovery), SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD.
• Experience in CNC routing, laser cutting, thermoforming, bending, bonding and welding of plastics.
• Knowledge of DFM principles and engineering drawing creation.
