Senior Engineering Manager - AI Foundations Team

About the role

Toast builds technology for restaurants and local businesses, and its AI Foundations team builds the infrastructure, governance and developer tooling that makes AI reliable and scalable across product development. This Senior Engineering Manager role leads Internal Agent Experience operations in Ireland and India, contributing to the strategy and delivery of how Toasters across every function work with agents, from plugins to agents embedded in the software development lifecycle.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and grow a distributed team of engineers across Ireland and India, building an operating rhythm that works across time zones
• Help set the strategy and roadmap for the internal agent ecosystem, covering developer tooling (coding agents, plugins, skills, MCP servers) and agents for non-engineering functions
• Own delivery of specific components of the internal agent platform, from design through production, including integrations connecting agents to Toast systems and data
• Drive adoption across R&D and the wider company by partnering with product managers on customer research
• Set guardrails for agent usage with Security, Legal and Finance, including access controls, data handling and visibility into AI spend
• Define and report metrics such as adoption, time saved, quality and cost per outcome to AI Foundations and R&D leadership
• Stay hands-on with agentic development practices and champion AI tools to accelerate development and set the bar for an AI-first engineering organization

Required profile

• 5+ years managing software engineering teams with an extensive background in software development
• Track record of delivering internal platforms or developer tooling with measurable adoption
• Solid technical foundation in building and operating distributed systems or SaaS products
• Experience leading distributed teams across multiple countries and time zones
• Nice to have: experience with MCP servers, agent frameworks or plugin ecosystems, LLM cost management or FinOps for AI spend, evals and quality measurement for LLM systems, enterprise integrations (Slack, Google Workspace, Atlassian, Salesforce) and enablement or change management for technical tooling

Required skills

• Daily hands-on use of coding harnesses (e.g. Claude Code, Codex) and LLM-based tooling
• Ability to turn fast-moving, ambiguous technology into a clear roadmap and make prioritization calls with incomplete information
• Communication and influence at director and executive levels, including with non-engineering functions
