Transport Operations Manager

About the role
This position offers an experienced transport professional the chance to lead a growing organisation's transport function. You will be responsible for safe, compliant, and cost‑effective delivery of goods while maintaining high service standards for customers.
Key responsibilities
- Lead day‑to‑day transport operations, ensuring efficient goods delivery and top‑level customer service.
- Oversee transport planning and route optimisation to maximise fleet utilisation.
- Maintain full compliance with transport legislation, including Driver Hours Regulations, Working Time Directive, Tachograph rules, Operator Licence requirements and Health & Safety standards.
- Manage and develop transport teams – drivers, planners and support staff – fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
- Monitor KPIs, analyse performance data and drive improvements in productivity, vehicle utilisation and cost control.
- Own fleet management activities such as maintenance schedules, defect reporting and roadworthiness compliance.
- Control transport budgets, fuel spend, subcontractor usage, fleet maintenance and labour costs.
- Build strong relationships with customers and stakeholders, ensuring service expectations are consistently exceeded.
- Investigate and resolve operational issues, service failures and customer concerns promptly.
- Support customs documentation and import/export activities where required.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on efficiency, compliance, sustainability and customer satisfaction.
- Develop contingency plans to manage disruptions and changing business needs.
Required profile
- Proven experience in a Transport Manager, Transport Operations Manager, Distribution Manager or similar leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of transport legislation, fleet compliance and driver management.
- Experience in a distribution, logistics, FMCG, retail, manufacturing or supply‑chain environment.
- Solid commercial awareness and ability to deliver results in a fast‑paced setting.
