About the role
The Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration is establishing the Tribunal for Asylum and Returns Appeals (TARA) to replace the International Protection Appeals Tribunal. TARA will handle appeals under the International Protection Act 2026, aiming for faster decisions on asylum and return orders. The role is part‑time and supports the quasi‑judicial function of the new tribunal.
Key responsibilities
- Review and decide on appeals related to international protection, return orders, and suspension of the duty to leave the State.
- Work with civil‑service caseworkers who prepare factual briefs and conduct research on request.
- Apply the timelines and procedural requirements set out in the EU Pact and the 2026 Act.
- Contribute to the development of efficient, transparent appeal processes.
Required profile
- Relevant legal qualification or extensive experience in immigration, asylum, or administrative law.
- Strong analytical ability to assess complex legal arguments.
- Excellent written communication for drafting decisions.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with caseworkers.
